Letter from the Director

Hello, Everyone!

My name is Jacky Swindler and I have been owner/operator and director of First Step Learning Center since 1989. Throughout my time operating the center I have had the opportunity to meet and spend time with the most amazing children and families. It has been a pleasure to work with and care for so many chilfren in Freeport and the surrounding areas, and I look forward to making more new friends in the years to come.

I have taught and cared for children for most of my adult life. I have six wonderful children of my own who I love and cherish. Four of them are grown and starting their own lives, and my twin just entered middle school this fall. Children are special gifts to me and I feel blessed to have so many of them in my life.

During my years at First Step, as well as being the director, I have worked in the infant classroom and have been physically on site to develop a relationship with all children and parents. I strive to be available to help with questions, give direction, and to make families feel comfortable in knowing that the owner is part of the center.

I feel the most important aspect of caring and education children is to help them develop a positive self concept and to make them feel special, loved, and heard. With this foundation, it opens up the doors for learning and social confidence.

One of the great things about First Step Learning Center is that it’s more that just a child care center. First Step is a center where we endeavor to cultivate a true community. Through annual potluck picnics, holiday sing alongs, and family outings, I feel that we offer an experience and a facility that truly focuses on whole health of a child, a happy home away from home.
